Vitamin A is required for good night vision and for the health of skin and mucous membranes of the respiratory, digestive and urinary tracts. Vitamin A is fat soluble substance found in fish liver oil and oily fish. Vitamin A should not be taken during pregnancy, or if pregnancy is planned without the advice of a doctor or ante-natal clinic. Manifestations of vitamin A over-usage are: severe headaches, nausea or vomiting, drowsiness, irritability and pruritus. Adults are likely to experience pain in bones and joints if they have over-used vitamin A. If symptoms occur, vitamin A should be discontinued, but the symptoms should subside in about 72 hours. Beta Carotene is a much better way to take vitamin A. Beta carotene is found in orange, yellow and dark green fruits and vegetables. Beta Carotene is converted in to Vitamin A in the liver and intestines as required by the body. As the quantity of Beta Carotene increases, the proportion of the absorbed material converted to vitamin A decreases and more of the carotene enters the bloodstream unchanged. Therefore, vitamin A toxicity is avoided in beta carotene form. Beta Carotene, even in high doses is regarded as non-toxic. The only side effect is a yellow coloration of the skin as a result of the Beta Carotene being stored in the fatty tissues and circulating in the blood stream, where it has been discovered to be a potent anti-oxidant and free radical scavenger.
